Los Angeles will get a new outpost of one of Mexico City?s best-known churrer?as when El Moro opens its doors in Echo Park on January 29. The arrival of this near?century?old institution ? now housed in a renovated Sunset Boulevard storefront ? adds a high-profile sweet stop to a neighborhood already hungry for authentic Mexican desserts and coffee.
The Echo Park location marks El Moro?s second entry into Southern California after the brand launched its first U.S. store inside Costa Mesa?s Mercado Gonz?lez in 2023. Company leadership says the response in Orange County convinced them there was demand for another Los Angeles outpost.
The site, formerly Patra Burgers, has been transformed over roughly eight months of construction and permitting work into a roughly 1,500?square?foot caf?. Interior seating holds about 30 patrons, with a patio able to welcome around 40 more. The buildout and interior concept were led by designer Nacho Cadena, and a new exterior mural by Los Angeles artist Ozzie Juarez wraps the building?s side wall, giving the corner a vivid visual presence on Sunset and Laveta Terrace.

What to expect on opening day and beyond
El Moro?s Echo Park launch begins the evening of January 29 at 5 p.m. The first 50 visitors will receive complimentary churros, and guests who buy a beverage that night get two free churros. After opening, the shop?s regular hours will be Sunday?Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The address is 1524 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90026.
- Signature item: freshly fried, cinnamon?dusted churros served individually or in boxes of four or 12, plus a mini size.
- Dip choices: chocolate, chocolate?hazelnut, cajeta, condensed milk, and rotating seasonal flavors.
- Specials: tortas (al pastor and asada) and the spiraled churro ice cream sandwich known locally as the consuelo.
- Beverages: aguas frescas, milkshakes, caf? de olla and Mexican iced lattes in flavors such as horchata, churro and lechero. Hot chocolate options include an Oaxaque?o style, a French version and a Mexicano made with cacao sourced from Mexico.
The menu keeps the classic El Moro focus on simple, high?impact items prepared to order. Staff will box warm churros for takeout and pair them with a selection of dipping sauces, replicating the indulgent experience longtime customers know from the Mexico City flagship.
Why this matters for Echo Park and L.A.
El Moro?s arrival signals more than one more dessert spot: it reflects the continued appetite in Los Angeles for authentic Mexican culinary brands expanding from Mexico into U.S. neighborhoods. For local diners it means easier access to a deep?rooted dessert tradition, and for Echo Park it adds another destination likely to draw both neighborhood regulars and visitors exploring Sunset Boulevard.
Practical note: the opening was postponed from an earlier target because of construction and permit timing, so those planning to visit should expect lines early in the run and consider off?peak hours for shorter waits.
