On the weekends (and whenever else possible) I like to venture off to my beloved City of Angels to eat and explore the latest and greatest happenings in terms of food. As such, be on the look out for more outside of SCV posts because it is okay to leave Awesometown once in a while. To kick off our new Los Angeles category, I visited Trois Familia in Silver Lake, the latest restaurant from Chef Ludo, Jon Shook, and Vinny Dotolo, aka the guys behind some of the best restaurants in LA (Trois Mec, Petit Trois, Animal, Jon & Vinny’s).
Trois Familia is a casual brunch spot that is only open from 10-3pm and unlike their other restaurants, they don’t take reservations. You simply show up, put your name on the list, and wait for your name to be called. I was prepared to wait, but after arriving at 2pm, we only had to wait about 20 minutes! The seating is communal, with simple white picnic benches. This no frills place is definitely all about the food! Get on the list by 3pm and you are guaranteed seating.
So, what exactly is French/Mexican brunch? Well, it is glorious. This may seem like an ordinary burrito, but once I took a bite, I couldn’t stop eating it. This is a French bean burrito with garlic brown butter and preserved lemon, and it is pretty great.
These are the Anson Mills grits with creme fraiche, pepitas, and tomatillo salsa.
This beet tartare tostada had cornichon (French), lime, and avocado milk.
When I saw potato tacos on the menu, I had to order them. I love potato tacos, but never had I had potato tacos like these. On the menu as double decker potato tacos (there’s a hard shell inside) they also had lime, créme fraiche, and were topped with a flavorful carrot pico de gallo.
The blueberry buttermilk pancakes topped with honey, banana, orange zest, and a hint of salt were out of this world. So fluffy and full of flavor, I couldn’t stop eating them. Some of the best pancakes in recent memory.
Since everything so far had been really solid, we couldn’t resist ordering one more item before last call, so we went with the chicken milanesa, topped with raw and pickled cucumbers and the perfect sauce. It was a great ending to our brunch meal.
It wasn’t my birthday (although I did go to Peit Trois for my birthday this year) but we couldn’t leave without ordering the tres leches birthday cake. So moist and fresh, it was the perfect sweet ending.
And the best part? Orangina on deck. My favorite drink on earth! For those of us that are fans of the Trois dynasty, this is the perfect accessible place for getting a quick bite without having to make plans months/weeks in advance. I absolutely loved it.
Tois Familia is located in a nondescript strip mall anchored by a Baskin Robins, and parking can be hard to come by unless you get there at just the right time (we managed to snag a spot right in front). But, the food is well worth it.
