Cinco Spots for Cinco De Mayo 2017

Spring is officially in full swing and early May means it’s time for that unique holiday that many north of the border don’t actually know what it’s about. (Hint: Not Mexican Independence… Second hint: Battle of Puebla.)  Nonetheless, here in the US, and in particular in the border region that is Southern California, we love to celebrate alongside our friends with heritage south of the border, regardless of the reason.  So, we here at eatSCV thought we should help you figure out your plans for this special Friday night fiesta with five places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Valle Santa Clarita.  No matter which one you choose, be sure to celebrate responsibly and get a ride home if you need one. (Uber or Lyft, or if you have my number, gimme a call, I’ll come get you.)

solita Tacos & Margaritas

Since taking over the spot previously held by two other Mexican restaurants that didn’t make it, solita has done incredibly well, establishing themselves as one of the restaurant anchors in the Patios at Westfield Town Center.  The outdoor bar is a perfect place to celebrate tonight if you get a chance to sit by the fire (always popular) and sip on one of their incredible margaritas made with fresh juices.  Specials for tonight include $5 beers and $10 watermelon margaritas.  You can’t go wrong with any of the margarita choices, but the El Hombre and the Skinny Margarita are ones to catch.

La Cocina

La Cocina's many margaritas

Santa Clarita legend La Cocina (or LaCo as the merch says) is sure to be jammed.  Last night they already had decorations out in anticipation of today at the Bouquet & Plum Canyons location. Be patient as there will most definately be a wait, but you’ll be rewarded with an incredible Cadillac Margarita.

Sabor Cocina Mexicana

Known partially for their wildly inventive cocktails like a prickly pear margarita (when in season), Sabor is one of the best hidden gems in Santa Clarita.  Rumor has it that presidential candidates dine here when they’re in town, and for good reason.  The food is top notch!  The carne asada burrito isn’t flank steak, but grilled rib eye and the enchiladas de marisco, filled with fresh crab and shrimp are my personal favorite.

El Trocadero Mesquite Grill & Cantina

This place is a true gem of Santa Clarita that isn’t widely talked about… but it should be.  Mexican steakhouse is the concept with a mesquite grill for all the proteins including ribeye, salmon, even rack of lamb.  In the heart of Old Town Newhall, definitely worth a try if you haven’t been before.

Dario’s

Not known for being stingy on the pour, Darios is a longtime Newhall establishment that branched out into a second location Canyon Country a year ago.  The original location, run by two brothers, has 20+ years of history in the Santa Clarita Valley and the new one is going strong run by their son/nephew.  Standard Mexican fare is on the menu, but again, if you’re looking for a good strong drink, Dario’s is the place to go.
